Instead of departing Miami today for a four-day cruise to the Bahamas, the big cruise ship Carnival Ecstasy is sailing north to Hampton Roads.
But this is no fun voyage. The passenger ship is heading north for emergency repairs following a shipboard fire Monday.
Carnival Corp. confirmed Thursday that the Carnival Ecstasy is coming to Newport News Shipbuilding for the work.
A Carnival representative could not say when the ship will arrive, how long it will stay or what repairs need to be done. He did say the ship would leave Miami for Newport News today and would sail under its own power.
