What was it that made soldiers in blue and gray, in khaki and olive drab, charge fortified lines, live in water-filled trenches or die in far-off jungles? It was not a lust for recognition or a craving for social advancement. It was character.

Character founded this nation. Character built this nation. And character has sustained this nation through wars, economic upheavals and social injustice.

Sadly, no other virtue has come under such withering attack. We are now told character does not matter anymore. We are told as long as the economy is healthy and America is at peace, character is neither critical nor relevant.
