A CENTURY AGO, nestled among the waterfront ship chandleries, ferry terminals, saloons and other businesses along Norfolk's Roanoke Docks, Edward Lee Hogshire set up a sail loft specializing in making canvas rigging for Chesapeake Bay work boats.
At the time, the Norfolk man was simply trying to make a living doing what he loved, meeting the needs of a booming marine market. Little did he realize he was planting the seeds of a family business that would thrive throughout the 20th century and eventually evolve into one of the Eastern Seaboard's premier awning manufacturers.
