These remarks by former Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr. were delivered at the dedication of the Godwin Courts Building on May 6.
To know a courthouse is to know a great deal about a people.
Much of the most basic information about our lives, and particularly our property, is stored at the clerk's office. The courthouses are aspirations of a community. They provide a forum in which disputes may be resolved peacefully, and the rights and obligations of citizenship are preserved and enforced. In a sense, they are the expression in bricks and mortar of hopes, ideals and a commitment to justice.
