WASHINGTON -- Government auditors have found evidence that U.S. nursing homes employ a significant number of workers who have criminal records.
``There is no assurance that nursing home staff who could place elderly residents at risk are systematically identified and excluded from employment,'' said the inspector general of the Health and Human Services Department, June Gibbs Brown. The report was prepared for a hearing today of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
