CLAY BIDWELL, the local gas station clerk, as played by Joaquin Phoenix, may look and act innocent, but he keeps turning up nearly dead bodies. He occasionally also gets involved with a live body - namely the town slut, played by Georgina Cates.
But Clay is guilty of only one thing - persistent bad judgment.
``Clay Pigeons,'' a dark comedy about murder, is set in Mercer, Mont., a small town that yearns, apparently, to be ``Fargo.''
