ELIZABETH CITY -- Since he was 3 years old, Emmett Parker Jones has been surrounded by big wheels. As a respected artisan, he is a big wheel.

He made carts, the kind that were family farm staples until tractors chugged on the scene. He has made wheels for cannons - two are on exhibit in Jamestown, some are used by a Revolutionary War re-creation group in upstate New York.

Jones is about to turn 85. He has been through a few operations, looks good now, but, he said, ``the doctor told me no heavy lifting.''

Those carts he's been making at his Tyner home weigh about 400 pounds.
