DIANE VON FURSTENBERG invented the fashion equivalent of the wheel when she created the cotton knit wrap dress in 1972.
Any woman who came of age in the 1970s probably remembers wearing one of those simple dresses, or at least a knock-off version, which flattered any figure and was as easy to care for as a T-shirt.
The dress became such a hit that 5 million were sold by 1976, the year Von Furstenberg appeared on the cover of Newsweek. She was only 29 and a single mother of two. The wrap dress now hangs in the Smithsonian Institution.
