FEW PLACES EXPLAIN the importance of the Navy in Norfolk as well as the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.
The museum, rich in local history, is a hidden gem within Nauticus. Folks can go to the museum without paying Nauticus' admission, and, in a tasteful refuge from the nautical amusements in the larger facility, learn about a major factor in making Norfolk the city it is today.
The only Navy-operated museum in Virginia moved to Nauticus three years ago to get off the base, thereby expanding its audience and size. It is more than twice as large as the old museum.
