Spanish pieces of eight.
Those silver coins conjure up childhood visions of pirates sailing the bounding main, of Blackbeard and Captain Hook, cutlasses and skulls and crossbones.
In fact, I never associated the coins with anything but pirates until I wrote about David Consolvo of central Virginia. His business is selling original coins to historic homes and gift shops. Often the coins are among the only original items in these shops because everything else is reproductions.
