RICHMOND -- Gov. James S. Gilmore III will announce today that it will cost almost twice as much to eliminate the car tax than what he promised in his campaign.
Gilmore will ask the General Assembly to appropriate $493 million over the next two years to begin phasing out the car tax, according to state government sources. During last year's campaign, Gilmore repeatedly insisted the cost would be $260 million and labeled critics who said he had gravely understimated the cost as ``the big tax lobby.'' The governor has scheduled a news conference for 12:30 p.m. today.
