NORFOLK -- In the extremely squared-away stateroom of Cmdr. George J. Karol III, commanding officer of the guided-missile frigate Kauffman, one item stands out: a paperback emblazoned with the title, ``Saddam Hussein and the Crisis in the Gulf.''
The Iraqi leader, scowling and scruffy-faced, stares out from the cover of the book, neatly stacked on a shelf alongside such titles as ``American Practical Navigator'' and ``Dutton's Navigation and Piloting.''
``It's one of those books I picked up when I was at the Naval War College,'' Karol said, ``but events just overwhelmed me. It's on my reading list now.''
