SUFFOLK -- Ten minutes. Six hundred seconds. One-third of a television sitcom.
Educators here are heeding the common American cry to fix public education - 10 minutes at a time.
The School Board is considering a proposal to add 10 minutes to the school day at its two high schools, beginning in the fall. Students would start classes earlier - at 7:45 a.m. instead of 7:55 a.m. - and still get out at 2:15 p.m., for a 6 1/2-hour day.
Ten minutes might not seem like much, but tack on 10 minutes of class time to each of 180 school days in a year, and you've increased instruction by 1,800 minutes. Or 30 ...
