PORTSMOUTH -- All lighted up in the night sky, it looked like the setting for a rocket launch - six beams reaching up, then arching to come together at a point 40 feet in the sky.
One day that space will provide the base for the steeple that the 600-plus members of Pinecrest Baptist Church agreed they wanted on top of their new sanctuary on Felton Road.
But, for now, those beams are the skeleton of that dream - and for 24 hours, beginning Sunday night, they were home to the ``preacher's perch'' - an outdoor deck for the Rev. Thomas Potter - and an unusual way of motivating his flock.
