We're all for accountability. And especially in the public schools, which consume the largest slice of Virginia's funding pie and are the main beneficiaries in local budgets as well.
But something's wrong when teachers stop teaching their assigned subjects and use the time instead to help pupils cram for elaborate new state-imposed testing. The Standards of Learning tests are being given over the next several weeks to some 375,000 pupils - third-, fifth- and eighth-graders and high schoolers - across the commonwealth.
