WASHINGTON -- Even as U.S. military planners continue to plot a possible strike against Iraq, the aircraft carrier Nimitz and its battle group are likely to leave the Persian Gulf by Sunday and head for their new home in Norfolk, a defense official said Wednesday.
The official, who spoke on condition that his name not be reported, said no final decisions have been made but that the Navy expects a normal turnover this weekend between the Nimitz and its relief, the carrier Independence. The latter ship and its battle group will arrive in the gulf today.
