When Confederate Adm. Franklin Buchanan, better known as ``Old Buck'' by his pre-Civil War U.S. Navy messmates commanded the CSS Virginia (the former USS Merrimack) during its initial encounter with the Federal blockading fleet in Hampton Roads on March 8, 1862, he was already a seasoned old salt with 46 exciting years of global sea service behind him.
