AS A YOUNG MAN growing up in Suffolk, Steve Tarkington dreamed of becoming a Virginia State Trooper.
When he suffered a heart attack at age 19, that dream came to an end. The athletic and ambitious teen-ager learned for the first time that he had two holes in his heart. The congenital heart defect led to two more heart attacks and open heart surgery. Although the surgery gave him a second chance at life, it did not save his dream. When he applied for state trooper training, he was turned down. His medical history made him a bad risk.
But Tarkington did not abandon his desire to work in law enforcement. ...
