Although he started only one game over the last two years, Keith Friel did not leave Notre Dame over a lack of playing time.
``There's no question I should have been playing earlier,'' said Friel, confirming his decision to transfer to Virginia. ``But I was playing 20 to 30 minutes at the end there.
``They said, `The next two years, you're the guy. We're running the offense at you.' Playing time never would have been a problem again.''
And the Irish appeared to be progressing. They beat nationally ranked West Virginia and Syracuse before Friel was hurt Jan. 31.
