BREMERTON, WASH. -- The band struck up ``Anchor's Aweigh,'' and a fireboat shot up a spray of water in salute as the battleship Missouri began its final voyage Saturday.
Thousands of people lined the downtown boardwalk and nearby piers and parks as the historic dreadnaught was towed into Rich Passage, en route to Hawaii. A small flotilla of pleasure craft accompanied the ship.
The mood ashore was subdued but hardly mournful, as residents waved goodbye to a ship that has spent most of the past four decades here.
A few waved flags, many pointed out the battleship to young children, and dozens recorded the event ...
