In a state that requires children to wear seat belts in cars and where most localities mandate helmets for bike riders under 14, it is outrageous that children are allowed to ride in the back of pickup trucks.
This legal oversight has yielded tragic results. In May, a 7-year-old Christiansburg girl was killed when she was thrown from the back of a pickup truck. The driver was charged with drunken driving, possession of marijuana and involuntary manslaughter. The girl's mother, a passenger, has now been charged with felony child abuse.
The senseless death of this child highlights the fact that Virginia treats cargo better than children. Virginia has laws ...
