Dec. 27--ON ELECTION NIGHT, Ted Koppel and the crew of Nightline formed an unusually flexible plan for covering a presidential contest that was way too close to call.

They camped out in the Atlanta airport and waited for election results to show them their way. If Gore won, they'd be off to Nashville, Tenn., in a flash. If Bush took the prize, Austin would be their late-night destination.

"We were going to be with the winner, one way or the other," Nightline executive producer Tom Bettag explained.
