Labor unrest made for a bumpy ride at United Airlines and its parent, Elk Grove Township-based UAL Corp.
Work slowdowns caused by the airline's powerful pilots union, coupled with bad weather, crippled the airline's summertime operations and resulted in more than 25,000 flight cancellations. On many days, the cancellations and delays made O'Hare International Airport a very unpleasant place to be, to put it mildly.
The service mishaps cost the airline close to $500 million-not to mention incalculable ill will among the flying public-and strengthened opposition to UAL's proposed $11.6-billion merger with Virginia-based US Airways Group Inc., a plan unveiled in May. And ...
