RICHMOND -- Allowing fast-food restaurants and other private businesses to operate at state-run highway rest stops could make the areas safer, Republican candidate for governor Jim Gilmore said Wednesday.
The state has taken several steps to combat a rash of violent crime at interstate highway rest areas, including installing video cameras and opening state police offices at the most troublesome sites.
Gilmore told The Associated Press he approves of those steps and believes putting stores and restaurants at isolated rest areas would further improve security.
