WHAT WOULD KEEP three crooning cowpokes on the trail for 20 years? One reason might be a shared belief in what they're doing. Another is they genuinely enjoy each other's company.
Both go a long way toward explaining the enduring appeal of Riders in the Sky. Ranger Doug (``Idol of American Youth'') has one more to consider:
``Separate hotel rooms. That's the real secret. Don't try and save money by bunking together.''
The Riders have had plenty of time to practice his theory. Since hooking up in 1977 at a Nashville club called Phranks & Steins, they've spent 200 days a year on the road, playing ...
