SOUTHERN SHORES -- For the first time in 18 years, this north beach community has a new mayor.
Councilman Gerald Beshens was elected by council Tuesday night to the town's top post, replacing longtime Mayor Kern Pitts.
Beshens defeated Carl Berntsen 3-2. Beshens, Councilman Dick Wood and newly elected Councilman Paul Sutherland voted in the majority.
The fallout from the financial woes of Project Blue Sky played a pivotal role in Beshens' election, officials have said. The town had to pay some $262,000 to bail out the program aimed at improving construction techniques in coastal communities.
