Jason Robards, who died Tuesday at the age of 78, won back-to-back Best Supporting Actor Academy Awards in 1976 and 1977 and gave a marvelously rueful and emblematic performance as Tom Cruise's dying father in the 1999 ensemble drama "Magnolia."
But he lived much of his early professional life in someone else's shadow. Born July 26, 1922, Robards was the son of Jason Robards Sr., a prominent stage and screen actor who appeared, often as a leading man, in more than 175 American films.
