Norfolk State University has far more female professors, proportionally, than any other state-supported four-year college in Virginia, reflecting progress for women and a continuing struggle for black men.
At Norfolk State, 48.3 percent of the full-time faculty is female, according to a report by the State Council of Higher Education.
The next-highest percentage is Longwood College's 41.8 percent. The lowest is Virginia Military Institute's 7.9 percent.
In Virginia and the rest of the nation, women hold a third of the full-time college teaching positions.
