IT WAS Jerry Seinfeld on the phone. Joseph M. ``Skip'' Collector Jr., the Emmy-nominated editor on the NBC sitcom, wasn't home to take the call.
Seinfeld left a message for Collector, the gist of which was this: ``Sorry you had to read about it in the newspaper before I had a chance to tell you in person. My apologies.''
The ``it'' was Seinfeld's announcement that after nine seasons, he was closing down the King Kong of sitcoms that carries his name. NBC tried to hire Seinfeld for another season with a deal reported to be worth $110 million. The network likely tossed in a ``pretty please'' or two.
