Amid the new year's cold spell, the mercury in Seoul is expected to drop to a morning low of minus 12 degrees Celsius tomorrow, the coldest weather so far this winter.
The bitter cold will begin to let up on Saturday with regional rain or snow, but is likely to return around Monday.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecast yesterday that a severe cold spell will grip the nation for the time being as a continental high pressure system expands, forcing morning lows of -18 to -2 degrees Celsius and daytime highs of -9 to 6 degrees Celsius. It added that, ``the temperature will seem to be much lower, due to strong winds.''
