When I first met Butkus on a chilly, damp Saturday last February in Gates, N.C., I heard the announcer at the first dog weight pull held in the area call the big, friendly pooch a hometown hero.
As I've gotten to know him better, I realize that he has everything it takes to make a star.
Butkus is a 3-year-old bull mastiff/St. Bernard mix. His owner, Debbie Lee, calls him a cutup and a ham. Seeing the two of them lounge on the grass between pulls gives you the idea that, to Lee, he's also probably a best friend.
