Switch machines reducing risk of injuries, improving efficiency.
In this age of high-tech machines, the "old-fashioned" switch stand is giving way to the switch machine. Switch manufacturing companies have been saying, "Switch stands? No, we don't make those anymore, but we do have a switch machine." The switch machines are usually safer and more efficient than the stands. However, they do come with a higher price tag. Manufacturers leave it up to the railroads to decide which to use on their lines and in their yards.
