Chicago-area Muslims on Wednesday celebrated the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting, Ramadan, with a day of community prayer, thanksgiving and meals.
Eid-ul-Fitr, the "feast of fast breaking" and one of the most important holidays on the Islamic calendar, follows 30 days of refraining from food, drink, smoking and sexual activities from sunrise to sunset.
Traditionally for Eid, Muslims awake early in the morning, dress up and gather in large numbers for prayers, emphasizing an essence of community.
