Jan. 3--Three hundred years after French explorers founded Detroit as a fur-trading outpost, French auto parts suppliers are moving to southeastern Michigan in record numbers to be part of a different economy, the global auto industry.
Lured by a large and until-recently booming American market, French auto parts suppliers have been opening sales offices, research and development centers, and manufacturing plants in the region at the rate of one every two months, said French Trade Commissioner Jerome Chastenet, whose office is in Detroit.
