As expected, the US Congress voted to extend Medicare coverage of immunosuppressive medications for certain organ transplant recipients. (Transplant News, December 15, 2000) The provision was included as part of HR 4577, a broad spending and Medicare bill which was approved by Congress December 15 and signed by President Clinton December 21.
Transplant recipients whose surgery was covered by Medicare and who are eligible for Medicare based on age or disability will now have coverage of their immunosuppressive drugs for the life of their transplant.
