Article: WTO RULES AGAINST AMERICAN WHEAT GLUTEN QUOTAS.(Brief Article)

Endorsing the broad outlines of its report of 1 August 2000, the World Trade Organisation's Appellate Body ruled on 22 December that import quotas introduced by the United States on 1 June 1998 for wheat gluten are inconsistent with the Agreement on Safeguards (see European Report No 2522 for further details). The EU had lodged a complaint against the measure in June 1999. The report recommends that the Dispute Settlement Body should invite the United States to fall in line with the Agreement on Safeguards, and confirms the WTO panel's conclusion that the United States acted in a manner incompatible with its international trade obligations by excluding imports from Canada ...
