Chicago -- The overall rate of pregnancy loss following mid-trimester amniocentesis performed by ob.gyns. at one institution was 1 in 47, a rate far greater than the widely quoted statistic of t in 200, Dr. William Blessed reported.
A patient education brochure published by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists entitled 'Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling" states that for every 200 amniocentesis procedures, approximately one miscarriage will occur as a result.
Yet in a study that was conducted by Dr. Blessed and his associates at their institution, patients had an overall miscarriage rate of 1 in 47 within 30 days of having an ...
