CHOLESTEROL SCREENING: The National Campaign is Premature
These things usually start with the best of intentions. In this case, government physicians, fired up with new evidence that lowering blood cholesterol levels can reduce the rate of heart disease, have initiated a national screening program. All Americans over the age of 20 years are now encouraged to have their blood cholesterol levels checked. New treatment guidelines, both dietary and drug, were announced last year by the National Cholesterol Education Program, spearheaded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in conjunction with more than 20 health organizations.
