Two-Term Mayor Served on NLC Board
NEW YORK (AP) -- John V. Lindsay, the shirt-sleeved Ivy Leaguer who led New York City as mayor through the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s, died December 19 in Hilton Head, S.C., of complications from pneumonia and Parkinson's disease. He was 79.
Lindsay had moved to a South Carolina retirement community last year.
Lindsay was active in NLC during his years in municipal office. He served on the NLC Board of Directors for three years in the late 1960s and ran for NLC Vice President in 1969. He lost that election in a business meeting floor vote to then-Indianapolis Mayor and now-Senator Richard G. Lugar.
