In the early evening of Sunday, Jan. 12, 1969, the pro football championship game now known as the Super Bowl didn't have much appeal; everybody knew the NFL's powerful Baltimore Colts were going to reduce the AFL's New York Jets to rubble. True, the Jets' flashy quarterback, Broadway Joe Namath, had "guaranteed" a victory three days earlier, but that could be dismissed as so much blather. So I made a dinner date and skipped the telecast.
Bad move. Three hours or so later, I arrived home and flicked on the TV in time to hear NBC announcer Curt Gowdy say, " . . . and once again the final score: Jets 16, Colts 7."
