Jan. 6--DETROIT--The Federal Reserve Board's sudden interest-rate cut of one-half percentage point had all the signs of a pre-emptive strike against a recession.
Is this really the end of the boom?
"It's sure slowing, but all the talk about a recession is just talk," said economist Ken Goldstein. "There's a lot left in this economy."
Goldstein studies the economy for the Conference Board, a New York research group for major corporations.
He said Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan acted Wednesday not so much to fend off a recession as to persuade the incoming Bush administration and new Congress to abandon the idea of a large tax cut. ...
