From around 1800 to around 1175 B.C., the Hittite kingdom, located in what is now central Turkey, was one of the major powers of the ancient world, equal in terms of political development and military power to the Babylonians, Assyrians, and Egyptians. The Hittite language is of considerable interest to linguists, being the earliest relative of the Germanic, Romance, Slavic, Indian, and Persian languages to take on a written form.
