2001 JAN 16 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- A study published in the journal Thorax says that ligase chain reaction is a valuable primary screening test when used on samples from patients suspected of having Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections.
According to study authors, the test can detect DNA sequences that characterize the mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis.
In a study of 2,420 patient samples, including sputum, bronchial lavage, and other bodily fluids, 39 patients were found to be M. tuberculosis-positive based on ligase chain reaction screening. Thirty-two of those patients had newly diagnosed cases of tuberculosis, while the other seven ...
