THE WAITRESS gave me a motherly look. ``You're not going out looking for birds in weather like this, are you?''
I hated to admit it, but I had already been out for two hours in ``weather like this,'' and it was only the thought of a bowl of clam chowder at the Seagull Pier Restaurant that persuaded me to give the birds a break.
I sipped the hot chowder, munched a grilled cheese, and kept my eye on the restaurant window, in case some interesting birds might appear. My binoculars and notepad occupied the place setting next to mine, and the chair was filled to the overflow with surplus clothing.
