Perhaps they've seen too many games. Or maybe, like a lot of baseball fans, historians - or those who call themselves purists - have paid so much attention to numbers over the years that they've forgotten.

Because if they remembered, if they relied on nothing but their memories, the voters for the Baseball Hall of Fame would know just how deserving Rich "Goose" Gossage is of their shrine.

They'd remember what an event it was every time he took the mound and how he was greeted like a matador.

They'd remember what a force of nature, what an imposing presence, what a dominating player he was. They'd remember his greatness.
