While researchers at the University of Missouri-Colombia are studying estrogen in mice to see how estrogen could protect us against high blood pressure, the preliminary findings from the U.S. Women's Health Initiative are not too promising.
After two years, in a large study of more than 27,000 women, less than one percent of the participants had a heart attack, blood clot, or stroke. Good news, you say? We thought so too, until we read further and realized that there were slightly more cardiovascular problems in women who took estrogen and progesterone, or estrogen alone, than those who took no hormone replacement at all.
