From the Russian Revolution in 1917 to relatively recently, mineral specimens from the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or Soviet Union, were hard to come by in the West. The politics of the Cold War erected barriers to travel and trade that only started to lessen a little more than. a decade ago.
