SAN FRANCISCO -- Hormone replacement therapy is associated with a significantly increased risk of adult-onset asthma in postmenopausal women, according to data from the Nurses Health Study.

In an analysis of more than 43,000 postmenopausal women, those currently on conjugated estrogen monotherapy had an 80% higher risk of developing adult-onset asthma, compared with women who had never been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Current use of estrogen plus progestin increased risk by 60%, Dr. Graham Barr reported at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.
