A new set of initiatives that went into effect January 1 has in effect strengthened the Montreal Protocol, the first international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer.
As a result of the new amendments, member countries of the Montreal Protocol must stop production of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), ban the use and trade of fire-extinguishing agent bromochloromethane, and report on its use of pesticide methyl bromide.
