After putting off purchases of new desktop PCs in 1999 due to concerns about Y2K, corporate buyers shifted gears a bit in 2000: Shipments should grow by about 9% this year, says Robyn Bergeron, industry analyst, computing & Internet, Cahners In-Stat Group. "Buyers are more confident now."
Still, Charles Smulders, principal analyst for Dataquest's Personal Computers Worldwide program, sees a slowdown in shipment growth around midyear. His reasoning: saturation. "Everybody who wants a PC has one." Dataquest is a unit of Gartner Group.
